Cancer is a very mysterious disease that has unpredictable activity most of the time. Because of the abnormal movement and growth of cancer cells, it can proliferate, multiply, invade or travel through blood and lymph to different places. This pattern change from a patient to another and should be monitored closely once it is detected that this patient is suffering from cancer as it is a life threatening case.
Although this abnormal behavior, there is a classification for the cancer according to the origin of the infected cells. The first category is the carcinoma where the cancer malignant cells are derived from the epithelial cells of different tissues forming breast, prostate lung or colon cancer tumors.
The second category is the sarcoma where the cancer cells are derived from the connective tissue of the body. The third category is the lymphoma where the malignant abnormal cells are derived from the blood forming cells like in case of leukemia. The fourth category is the blastoma where the tumor consists of embryonic cells and it is more common in young children rather than adults.
According to the category of the tumor, its name is composed of two syllabuses, the Latin name of the organ followed by the type of the cancer or its category. For example, a liver cancer will be called “hepatocarcinoma”.
